I recently rediscovered this recipe and fell in love with it all over again. I forgot how easy and flavorful it was. This sauce works great with tofu but you can also use it with other proteins like chickpeas or chicken.

This recipe calls for honey but you could sub in maple syrup instead. It may not glaze as nice but the flavour is still there. Just play around with the amount you use because the sweetness can vary depending on the grade of maple syrup (amber versus dark for instance). If you choose this option let me know how it went!! Make sure to use fresh oranges as it adds just the right amount of tart to balance out the sweet honey. The addition of fresh ginger and garlic help make this a bold, stand-alone sauce.

As the sauce reduces, it becomes super glossy coating the tofu into a sticky flavour bomb. If the flavour of the ginger and garlic are too intense for your kiddos just dial it down slightly.

My older and younger sons LOVE this recipe but my middle guy has very sensitive taste buds. So for him, I will serve the tofu plain. You can’t win them all! Two out of three ain’t bad right?

Finger Licking Good Sticky Orange Sesame Tofu

  • 1 block of pressed tofu, cubed

  • 1 tsp tapioca flour (corn starch also works)

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • dash of salt

  • Orange sesame sauce
  • 1/3 cup of coconut aminos

  • 1/3 cup of honey

  • 3 tbs tomato paste

  • 3 tbs fresh orange juice

  • 1 tbs toasted sesame oil (regular will do as well)

  • 2 tsp garlic, minced

  • 1 tsp ginger, minced

  • pinch of salt and pepper

  • 2 tbs sesame seeds, toasted*


  • Using your hands gently press out any extra moisture from the tofu. If you have time press the tofu for 15-20 minutes. Then prehead oven to 400 degrees.
  • Then cut into cubes. Gently toss with the tapioca flour, salt and garlic powder and bake for 25 minutes.
  • Meanwhile in a medium mixing bowl add in all the sauce ingredients. Mix then pour onto a sauce pan. Cook over medium heat for 5-10 minutes. The sauce will start to ticken and reduce. Turn heat off so it does not overcook.
  • When the tofu is finished baking add the tofu into the sauce and gently mix to coat. Sprinkle the tosated sesame seeds on top and serve with rice and some steamed veggies.


  • To toast the sesame seeds just place on a baking pan and bake for 5-8 minutes at 350. Make sure to move them around to make sure they don’t burn.
