How I Became A Plant Based Mama

Hello! I am Patricia, a 35-year-old neuroscientist, mama of 3 spunky boys and married to a loving husband! Originally born in Brazil I am now living in Toronto, Canada with my family. A plant-based mama I love all things food, research and ways we can reduce our impact on the environment. But my favourite is capturing all of that on camera!

Food has such a powerful influence on our health and wellbeing, knowledge I hope to share with my boys and with all of you. The connection we have to food, and the culture surrounding the simple act of eating is so beautiful and magical. However, for many, it can cause a lot of stress.

Whether you are managing food allergies, intolerances, transitioning diets or have insecurities about food, this magical food-health connection is not universally experienced by everyone.

I strongly believe that we can all experience a healthy relationship with food, and that food can feel empowering. This is what I strive to teach my own children, the importance of trusting ourselves to eat intuitively, because hey what is life without the occasional ice cream!

However, this connection to food was not always so empowering for me. I began on this journey not for myself but for my son. Shortly after he was born he began to suffer from digestive upset, irritability, lack of sleep and eczema.

Fast forward many sleepless nights, we discovered at the age of 4 that he had multiple food allergies along with terrible stomach pain, slow sluggish digestion, and behavioral issues.  We were lost as to how to help him and frustrated having to watch him live in pain. His abdomen was always swollen and he was always close to threshold with his emotional state. With no clear answers we began on a journey of healing and recovery using whole plant-based foods (read more on this here, and our eczema story here). And my journey as a plant based mama began

I initially began an Instagram account as a way to gain inspiration and recipes for our new lifestyle. I was feeling very frustrated and overwhelmed with all the new recipes I had to learn, the endless homemade everything and the lifestyle changes that we had to make (no more ordering takeout when we were exhausted from work).

But after the first year on social media, my account evolved into something beautiful. A supportive community that has inspired and fuelled my love of simple, easy meals that heal and nourish our bodies. This first step opened my eyes to the power of healthy eating and this deep connection between food and health!

I slowly learned that recipes don’t have to be complicated to be delicious AND healing. I learned to simplify and slow down my cooking and focus on foods that are kid approved. I also learned to love food myself. And in this journey, I unexpectedly found my own food-health connection and relief from lifelong digestive issues.

I hope to share with you what I have learned through these past few years. I want to share the recipes we make and the journey we are still walking to hopefully inspire and educate those seeking their own journey to health.

As a plant based mama of 3 very energetic boys, my recipes have to be kid approved yet delicious enough for the adults (I mean I am a foodie after all)! So you can spend time playing with your kiddos rather than standing in the kitchen!
