Today, I'm bringing you another Brazilian-inspired recipe! One of my personal favorites is making batida de coco, or coconut cream cocktails. This refreshing drink features the rich tropical flavors of coconut, zesty lime, and aromatic Brazilian cachaça, creating a creamy and delightful tropical cocktail.

Our version of this classic cocktail has minimal prep, is made in a blender, and is completely dairy-free (and naturally gluten-free and nut-free as well). A sweeter, creamier version of our Coconut Margarita Recipe!

I had my first sip of this creamy coconut drink on the beaches of Brazil when visiting my family, but I grew up enjoying the mocktail version as a child in Brazil. It’s the perfect drink to savor after a day of swimming and playing frisbee on the sand. This Brazilian cocktail is believed to have originated on those same beaches, where coconuts, cachaça, and good vibes are abundant.

This drink perfectly embodies the vibrant, carefree beach vibes of Brazil, and I often make it here in Canada. Incredibly easy to prepare, this cocktail is a great choice for hosting BBQs, backyard parties, or simply relaxing. We often make a mocktail version and love experimenting with flavors like strawberry, passion fruit, and mango.

👪Why You'll Love Batida De Coco

  • Refreshing and Fun: Perfect for hot days, it’s a refreshing unique treat that brings a fun vibe to any gathering.
  • Easy to Make and Serve: Simple to prepare, it’s a great option for both parties and quiet evenings. Plus, it makes fantastic mocktails.
  • Tropical Flavors: Our coconut cream cocktail is bursting with creamy coconut flavors, capturing the essence of the tropics.
  • Dairy-Free: our version of this coconut cream cocktail is made completely dairy-free!
  • Mocktail or Cocktail: Our recipe is delicious as a mocktail (non-alcohol version) too!

🍽️Serving Suggestions:

This Brazilian coconut cocktail is perfect for any occasion, whether it's a summer barbecue, a beach party, or simply a relaxing evening at home. Pair it with traditional Brazilian dishes like vegan pão de queijo, vegan brigadeiro, rice and beans, or bolinho de arroz to enhance your culinary experience. Serve it chilled in a rimmed glass with toasted coconut flakes and a lime wedge for an elegant touch.

🥥Ingredients

You only need a few simple ingredients to make our famous Brazilian batida de coco, a delicious coconut cream cocktail! Here is what you need:

ngredients for batida de coco, including coconut milk, coconut water, condensed coconut milk, cachaça (Brazilian rum), and limes.
  • Canned Coconut Milk: Traditionally, this cocktail uses creamy coconut milk because it provides a creamy base and enhances the cocktail's rich texture.
  • Condensed Coconut Milk: I opted for condensed coconut milk versus simple syrup to enhance the coconut flavor and tropical vibes of this drink. This will add sweetness and also help thicken this coconut cream cocktail.
  • Coconut Water: We also add coconut water for its subtle coconut flavor and to help ensure a smooth, light cocktail.
  • Lime Juice: Fresh lime juice balances the sweetness with a zesty tang.
  • Brazilian Cachaça: The traditional spirit for this drink! Cachaça is similar to a rum with an automatic, grassy flavor that will give this cocktail that authentic Brazilian kick. You can also skip this for a delicious mocktail recipe as well!

Optional but Recommended Garnishes:

  • Toasted Coconut Flakes: A crunchy garnish that adds a touch of elegance and extra coconut flavor.
  • Lime Wedges: A classic garnish that adds a refreshing citrus note.

Full quantities can be found in the recipe card below.

⚠️Gluten Alert: If you have celiac disease, ensure the coconut flakes are labeled certified gluten-free or skip this ingredient. While cachaça is generally gluten-free, always check the label for any possible cross-contamination warnings to ensure it is safe for those with celiac disease.

👩🏽‍🍳Step-By-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

In a blender, combine the coconut milk, condensed coconut milk, coconut water, lime juice, and cachaça. Blend until the mixture is smooth.

Chef Tip: Before opening your can of coconut milk give it a good shake. If your milk has separated, don't worry, as you will be blending everything together.

Mocktail Version

To make our Batida as a mocktail (no alcohol) simply leave out the cachaça! It's that easy! You will still get the most delicious mocktail that's fun to drink with a creamy flavorful taste.

Step 2: Rim the Glass

To a shallow bowl, add ¼ cup of condensed coconut milk. In another shallow bowl, add ¼ cup of the toasted coconut flakes. Gently press the rim of your cocktail glass into the bowl of condensed milk, then into the coconut flakes to coat.

💡Recipe Tips

Here are a few of my favorite tips to help you make the perfect batida de coco every time:

  • Rimming the Glass: For a beautifully rimmed glass, make sure the rim is slightly damp before dipping it in condensed coconut milk and then into the toasted coconut flakes. This will help the flakes stick better and give your cocktail that elegant touch.
  • Creating a Smooth Texture: To achieve a perfectly smooth texture, blend your ingredients on high until there are no visible chunks. If you find the mixture too thick, add a little extra coconut water to reach your desired consistency.
  • Piña Colada Style: If you're craving a more piña colada-like experience, add a handful of ice cubes to the blender along with the other ingredients.
  • Use Fresh Lime Juice: Use fresh lime juice rather than bottled for a brighter, more vibrant flavor. It makes a noticeable difference in the final taste of your tropical drink.

🥡Storing Leftovers

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days. Before serving, give it a good stir or blend it again to refresh the texture.

🍍Recipe Substitutions

If you find yourself missing an ingredient or need a modification, here are some suggestions that have worked for us when making our Brazilian coconut cream cocktail recipe:

  • Cachaça: If you can’t find Brazilian cachaça, you can substitute it with white rum (or light rum) or add some coconut rum for a more coconut-infused cocktail.
  • Condensed Coconut Milk: If you are not dairy-free, you can use regular condensed milk (same quantity). Alternatively, you can add simple syrup (¼ cup) or sweetened coconut cream if you want that rich, creamy texture.
  • Coconut Milk: For a lighter version, you can use almond milk, oat milk, or another dairy-free milk alternative, though it will alter the flavor slightly.

🍹Cocktail Variation Ideas

If you love coconut cocktails and are looking to change things up, here are a couple of variations you can try:

Piña Colada Style: Blend the ingredients with ice cubes and add a splash of pineapple juice for a twist on the classic piña colada. Or skip the alcohol for a virgin piña colada.

Strawberry Batida: Instead of coconut milk, swap for 1 cup of frozen or fresh strawberries to the blender with the other ingredients for a fruity twist.

Passion Fruit Batida: Blend in the pulp of 2-3 passion fruits for a tangy, tropical variation.

Virgin Batida de Coco: Skip the cachaça for a non-alcoholic version that’s perfect for everyone to enjoy. The creamy coconut and lime flavors are just as delightful.

❔Recipe FAQ

What can I use if I don’t have a blender?

You can mix the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and strain it into your glass. It won’t be as smooth, but it will still taste great.

Is there an alternative to coconut flakes for garnishing?

If you can’t find gluten-free coconut flakes or prefer something different, try rimming your glass with a mix of sugar and lime zest for a zesty, sweet touch.

Can I make this cocktail ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the mixture in advance and store it in the refrigerator for up to two days. Just blend it again before serving for the best texture.

Can I make this without alcohol?

Batida de coco is delicious as a virgin cocktail. Simply omit the cachaça.

What can I use instead of cachaça?

If you can't find cachaça, white rum is a great substitute that maintains the tropical feel of the cocktail.
